Sažetak
The freedmen collegia of seviri Augustales, and the freedmen-citizen collegium of seviri, both represented the results of the social reforms introduced by Augustus. Unlike seviri, seviri Augustales served as cultores of the Imperial cult, and represented one of the key elements in its horizontal and vertical stratification. However, they were not priests: the cult- re¬lated rites were carried out, on their behalf, by the citizen-class sacerdos Augustalis. Seviri (mag¬istri) Augustales were the nucleus of the corporations that spanned the social space from citizen to slave classes. The upper layer was made up by patronus, pater, mater and sacerdos Augustalis, the freedmen quinquennales, curators and seviri Augustales, as well as slave-class arcarii. The freedmen members of the corporation made a part of the ordo Augustalium, which was posi-tioned directly below citizen-class ordo Decurionum in the municipal hierarchies. Ordo sevira-lium existed in a small number of municipalities only, and their nucleus was made up of seviri (without the epithet of Augustales). The organisational structure of the Augustal associations evolved over three centuries. In this context, after the establishment of the association by Au-gustus, the critical point for the organisation ensued in the Flavian period, when the association was reorganised. During the 2nd century, the cult-related activities of the Augustals focused on the living Emperors. The social prestige, the wealth, and the contribution to the Imperial cult brought about social advancement to the upper layer of seviri Augustales, particularly to quinquennales and the curators, through the award of decurion insignia, thus facilitating the integration of freedmen and citizen classes in the Empire.
