Sažetak
Islamic militants in Afhanistan declerad war on idols, defined as "all statues and shrines of infidels". Mostly explained as a political issue, the destruction of monuments (identified as idols) by Islamists is not viewed as a revival of an anachronistic ban on idolatry largely due to the fact that western audiences no longer recognize conceptions of idolatry, aniconism and iconoclasm as a valid or even possible cause of sustained political action. This paper claims that while the ban on idolatry persisted in all three main monotheistic religions, idol tolerance in practice had an asymmetrical development with consequences for the social lives of citizens today. The paper establishes the relevance of idolatry as a confirmed discursive tradition in monotheism and studies its reflections in the modern day Islamic world.
