Sažetak
The first traces of the existence of Vlaški and Žejanski language, known under the linguistic term Istro-Romanian language, was found on the Istrian peninsula already in the 17th century. In the second half of the 19th century, the academic community started to gain more interest in this language, i.e. its variants spoken in two areas: in Šušnjevica and the neighbouring villages situated along the southern slopes of the mountain Učka and in the village Žejane, on the northern mountainous part of the Istrian peninsula. To conduct the research, the researchers had to arrive to the mentioned villages and stay for a shorter or longer period with the locals, i.e. informants. Such researcher notes included the descriptions of locals’ personal traits, everyday jobs, traditional clothes or houses. In time, the research interest was not focused solely on the language as the subject of research, but other researchers of other disciplines, such as ethnographers or anthropologists, also joined the linguists in studying these places. Thus they all contributed by publishing the results of their research not only to the description and knowledge of Vlaški and Žejanski language, but they also left valuable insights about the speakers and the traditional life, which has now, just as the language itself, almost completely vanished. Such presentations of language communities were performed externally, as a result of methodological framework and researcher perspective, but from the second half of the 20th century, the community itself, the one in Žejane, actively involved in the promotion of its linguistic peculiarity through the work of the folklore association. A significant step in the promotion and documenting the language as intangible heritage, in which the members of both language communities actively participated, was realized in the last decade through a series of different activities as a part of the project Preservation of the Vlaški and Žejanski Language, as well as through the associations in Šušnjevica and Žejane established as a result of the project. These associations later started a few independent projects with the goal of preserving and promoting the tangible and intangible heritage. A step further in that direction was the opening and the operation of the ecomuseum in Šušnjevica. The Ecomuseum Vlaški Puti is the place of valorisation and presentation of history and traditional culture of Šušnjevica and its surroundings with a particular emphasis on the transmission of knowledge about Vlaški language. It consists of an interpretation centre and a media library in the area of the former school in Šušnjevica and hiking theme trails in the Učka Nature Park, directly related to the life and activities of the community. This presentation in Žejanski language will present the past of Žejane and its inhabitants from the perspective of a researcher and reconstructed on the basis of the sources and published literature, while the Interpretation Centre of the Ecomuseum Vlaški Puti as an example of an innovative way of promoting Vlaški language, will be presented in Vlaški language.
