Sažetak
Agroecosystem sustainability is under a major threat, as management practices degrade soils, leading to the decline of soil productivity, and ultimately to their loss through erosion processes. Human influence is the leading cause of soil degradation and erosion. The research was conducted in Orahovica, Croatia, wherein samples were taken on four selected treatments with different forms of soil management – grass- covered older (GCO), tilled older (TO), mulched younger (MY), and tilled younger (TY) – and 8 rainfall simulations per treatment were performed. The results showed that grass-covering enhanced soil properties, while mulching did not. Grass-covering reduced sediment concentration in the runoff by 86.15%, while mulching reduced it by 54.98%. This resulted in 86.40% lower sediment loss in GCO and 61.94% reduction in MY in addition to tilled treatments. Moreover, GCO and MY treatments observed a substantial decrease in carbon and phosphorous losses in addition to TO and TY, respectively. In the moderate continental climate with high precipitation, grass-covering should be used regularly since it does not reduce soil water content significantly and positively impacts soil properties while reducing soil erosion. Mulching should be used as a conservation measure during establishments of the new vineyards.
