Sažetak
The three apostolic visits of John Paul II to Croatia present significant events in Croatian history by his memorable efforts to spread the message of the Gospel and the fearless testimony of the words of Christ. The presence of the Holy Father in Croatia ranged from the blood-soaked birth of its independence after the Homeland War (September of 1994), through the strenghtening of its Christian identity in light of the sanctity of the Cardinal Stepinac (October of 1998), until his encouragement for the rejuvenation of the Christian identity of Croats at the beginning of the third millennium (June of 2003). His visits were imbued with the desire to provide an answer to the most fundamental question of how to live one’s Christian identity and in what way one can offer testimony of Christ the Savior in those decisive times. The Pope found an answer by contemplating the Gospel, which speaks of peace, forgiveness and communion. In particular from the initially effort to attain lasting moral virtues all the way to the realization of the call for sanctity, which is the spirit of apostolate. The history of Christianity and martyrdom among the Croats, can be seen in the heroic testimony of Blessed Alojzije Stepinac which requires a continuous commitment. The Croats must act in a worthy way to carry the honorable title of the ‘Nation of St. Peter’, and amidst the European nations ‘The Wall of Christianity’. The holy Pope, during his visits, clearly marked out this path, pointing to the importance of loyalty to Christ, love and adherence to the Holy Roman Church and the Chair of St. Peter and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary – The Queen of the Croats.
