Sažetak
Tourism generates diverse and complex economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts on destinations. Tourism organizers, destination planners and service providers tend to emphasize positive effects, while often underestimating or neglecting to consider negative environmental impacts such as atmospheric pollution. The environmental impact of tourism is clearly visible when focusing on the transportation of tourists. Getting to and from destinations generates significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions that directly contribute to global warming. In modern scientific research carbon footprint method is increasingly applied to determine the intensity of the environmental impact of tourism related transport, or more specifically CO2 emissions. The possibilities of carbon footprint research in the form of case studies are monitored across different fields of research, including tourism. This review paper aims to analyse the development and application of the carbon footprint method in relation to the sustainable development of tourism, looking specifically at sports tourism. The paper brings out and analyses available literature represented in the WOSCC database and other secondary data sources. In addition to presenting the carbon footprint scientific methodology (concerning its development and application from the aspect of sustainable development), this paper presents and discuss basic factors affecting the transport carbon footprint of sports tourists. An overview of the carbon footprint studies of tourism provides systematization insight concerning this growing area of scientific interest, especially for sports tourism researchers. The research points out the potential contribution of future carbon footprint research and complement methods in the overall picture of environmental burden. Not yet covered carbon footprint research topics are presented to propose an impetus agenda for future research on sustainable development pertinent to topics of environmental burden generated by sports tourism.
