Sažetak
In the spring of 2002, the most widespread epidemic of hemorrhagic fever with renal sindrome (HFRS) so far occured in Croatia with almost 300 patients with serologically confirmed diagnosis hospitalized by the end of August. A total of 284 cases have been reported to the Croatian National Institute of Public Health until September 9, 2002. The epidemic started in winter, lasted throughoutb the spring, including summer months as well. The epidemic spread almost throughout Croatia. The majority of patients were hospitalized in Zagreb, followed by Karlovac, Rijeka and Požega. Antibodies to Puumala virus were detected in more than 90% of cases. Apart for long duration, this epidemic is characteristic for its occurrence among the general population ( without specially targeting soldiers and forestry workers). Clinically, the disease presented in mostly milder form with general symptoms and momentary renal insufficiency, with rare cases of bleeding. The authors discuss the importance of determining criteria for evaluating disease severity. The need for a comprehensive, epidemiological, ecological and mammalogical investigation is also stressed as well as hantavirus typization in these regions.
