Sažetak
In this seminar, the project of the Croatian Science Foundation entitled “Manifestations of Modern Sculpture in Croatia: Sculpture on the Crossroads Between Socio-political Pragmatism, Economic Possibilities and Aesthetical Contemplation” shall be presented, or rather the results of its three-year long undertakings. In brief, the project dealt with various questions and issues connected to modern sculpture in Croatia, covering a wider period from the end of the 19th century to the 1970s. This seminar shall aim to more closely present the reciprocal relationship between political action and artistic creation, primarily through the artistic and biographical path of Ivan Meštrović, one of the most propulsive Croatian sculptors of the first half of the twentieth century. Furthermore, the issue of the completely neglected aspect of the sculptural activity and its representation during the Second World War in Croatia shall also be discussed, particularly through the ideological significance of this period.
