Sažetak
The reasons for studying idioms of a particular language are abundant. In addition to their peculiar grammatical, syntactic and particularly semantic characteristics, they reflect our own language competence, knowledge of the world, experience and cultural assumptions. To contrast and analyse certain idiomatic expressions of the two different languages, English and Croatian, represents even a greater challenge and necessity in ELT in Croatia, given the frequency of their use and the possibly funny way of both their acquisition and use in both languages. Therefore, my presentation aims at pointing out to the hidden appeal of English idioms to Croatian students in a new and interesting way and placing emphasis on the need to follow a distinctive and specific approach to the translation of the English idioms into the Croatian idiomatic equivalents. Firstly, the English idioms are introduced to the Croatian students by providing them with an adequate linguistic, conceptual and cultural background of the idioms in question. Secondly, by drawing on the contrastive analysis the two-language idioms are contrasted on the morphological, syntactical and communicative and stylistic level and the possible errors that could be made in the process of translating the English idioms into the Croatian idiomatic equivalents are assumed. Thirdly, students are given the task to translate a few sentences with the idioms and are encouraged to use the functional approach to translation bearing in mind primarily the pragmatic or communicative features of the idioms, then the sociocultural characteristics and afterwards the linguistic attributes of the idioms. Once, they are made aware of the abovementioned idiomatic features, they are supposed to find their way around their native language easily. Finally, the different translation solutions are analysed, the encountered translation errors are discussed and the appropriate translation equivalents are agreed.
