Sažetak
It is assumed that beliefs about language learning can affect proficiency level achieved in a foreign language among students. For the purpose of this research, the authors decided to focus on beliefs and attitudes about German and English languages among Croatian students. It is a common belief that English language is easier to acquire and master, whereas German language is often thought to be more complicated and grammar considered to be very difficult. This paper aims at investigating beliefs about German and English language learning on the one hand, and success in learning English and German as foreign languages (EFL) among Croatian students. The results of the research show only minor differences in students' beliefs about both languages, so that the first hypothesis cannot be confirmed. The second hypothesis is only partly confirmed because only several BALLI items show significant correlation with languages in question. This study suggests that language learners´ beliefs about language learning are worth investigating to support language teachers in setting appropriate teaching goals.
