Sažetak
The α2 adrenergic receptor agonist drugs have established a place in the modern anesthesia practice because of their specific ability to produce a calming effect, without causing respiratory depression and, at the same, time promoting hemodynamic stability while reducing anesthetic requirements. Dexmedetomidine is a selective α2 adrenoreceptor agonist which has sedative, analgesic, sympathicolytic and anxiolytic properties. It has been described in literature as a useful, safe therapeutic adjunct in many clinical applications. This paper offers a comprehensive review of its mechanisms of action and clinical uses, with a special emphasis on hemodynamic effects.
