Sažetak
This article deals with some aspects of historical development, linguistic features and social status of Croatian Standard/Literary Language and its dialects. Special focus of the overview is on the importance of the standard language and dialects in the creation of the national identity. Furthermore, through the Croatian example, the article tries to offer an answer to the following question: Is the idea of constructing a lingua franca as a pivotal cultural element of cohesion in a national group a successful approach? Finally, the article provides textual examples of several typical differences between Croatian Standard Language and the dialects.
