Sažetak
In this review, we make a short overview of the major achievements of the “three-phase electrode” methodology applied for analyzing the ion transfer properties across the interface of two immiscible liquids. Exactly 20 years ago, the group of electrochemists led by Fritz Scholz, Sebojka Komorsky Lovric and Milivoj Lovric invented an elegant and simple set up suitable to get access to the thermodynamics ion transfers. Within the last two decades, the methodology of three-phase electrodes has been applied not only for the determination of thermodynamics of liquid-liquid interfacial transfer of many important ionic substances, but it has been explored for many other purposes. Thermodynamics of interfacial chemical reactions, kinetics of ion transfers, kinetics of electron transfers, interfacial catalysis, chiral molecular recognition, synthesis of nano-particles at the liquid-liquid interface, designing of simple biosensors, molecular insight into the structure of the liquid-liquid interface are just some of the milestones achieved by the three-phase electrode systems. As we briefly elaborate most of the major achievements of this technique, we also point out some of its future perspectives. Indeed, it is the simplicity of the three-phase electrode set up that makes this system convenient tool for future electrochemical studies.
