Sažetak
Energy planning of geographical islands presents more difficult task then energy planning on the mainland. Reason for this is that islands are detached from the mainland which imposes difficulties for transport from and to the island as well as water and energy supply issues. Topic of energy planning of smart islands has intensified recently due to the idea that island can represent test beds for pilot projects which solutions can later be transferred to the mainland. This is becoming increasingly important due to the installation of high amounts of variable renewable energy sources in the energy systems which requires implementation of new technology for energy system balancing. In the past twenty years many studies regarding energy scenario modelling on the islands have been conducted. However, authors tend to subjectively calculate scenarios that are modelled and analysed. This paper presents a novel Smart Islands method for calculation of energy planning scenarios based on quantitative indicators of islands’ needs and resources presented with RenewIslands method. The method automatically combines needs and resources and generates energy planning scenarios with precisely defined type and amount of required technology. Such approach eliminates subjective assessment for defining energy planning scenarios which enables more accurate modelling of defined scenarios. Case study is conducted on Krk island. Results show that novel method presented in this study provides 7 energy planning scenarios with different technologies for the island. The results are tested with Monte Carlo simulation.
