Sažetak
Microbial lipids or single-cell oils (SCO) have been studied for decades and since the beginning of the 20th century they have been exploited as an alternative source of oils and fats for human consumption and animal feed. The number of "oleaginous" microorganisms belonging to the genera of microalgae, yeast, bacteria, and fungi have ability to accumulate substantial amounts of lipids, mostly in the form of triacylglycerols, under specific cultivation conditions. Lipids produced by oleaginous fungi and microalgae are source of long chain ω-3 and ω-6-polyunsaturated fatty acids. Microbial lipids could be also use as an alternative large-scale feedstock for biodiesel production instead of edible oils. However, the high expense of the carbon source for microorganism growth and lipid production, coupled with low microorganism productivity and the high costs of lipid extraction, are the main obstacles to the broader commercialization of the biodiesel production. Lignocellulose biomass is non-food, low cost and renewable alternative source of sugars that could be use as substrate for lipid production. Since highly productive oleaginous microorganisms lack cellulolytic activity, lignocellulosic biomass has to be hydrolysed to fermentable sugars using cellulolytic enzymes or thermochemical process at elevated temperature in the presence of acid catalyst. The enzymatic hydrolysis is preferred to the hydrolysis using acid catalyst since it produces fewer side-products and the reaction is carried out in non-corrosive environment. Unfortunately, lignocellulosic biomass is highly recalcitrant to enzymatic hydrolysis due to its structural features. Therefore, lignocellulosic biomass is subjected to pretreatment process that breaks down the physical and chemical barriers and makes cellulose amenable to the enzymatic hydrolysis. Microbial lipids production from lignocellulosic biomass is carried out by submerged and solid state cultivation. Different strategies are used for enzymatic hydrolysis and lipid production process, including separate hydrolysis and lipid production (SHLP), simultaneous saccharification and lipid production (SSLP) and consolidate bioprocessing (CBP).
