Sažetak
Current approaches to adopting and teaching foreign languages for specific pur-poses are largely based on the logocentric principles of traditional linguistic the-ories, mainly focused on verbal languages realised through four basic skills. On the other hand, the development of a variety of digital tools has opened up space to a more recent approach to foreign language acquisition based on the semiotic theory of multimodality. This approach emphasises not only language but also multimodal communication competence, which besides verbalized text includes other texts, primarily picture and sound, in addition to other sensory stimuli. The very phenomenon of tourism has also made a shift in its development from primary visual (sightseeing) to other multi-sensory experiences, affirming other aspects of perception and cognition. Therefore, ESP in tourism is an excellent platform for the application of such a model of foreign language acquisition. As a simple way to apply this approach, the example of student presentations of se-lected tourist destinations will be provided through various ICT tools. Their seg- mentation will also be explained to capture a wider range of specific vocabulary areas in tourism, together with the role of multimodal resources and affordances in the cognitive process. Particular emphasis will be given to the motivational aspect of the whole approach as, apart from being learner-centred and promoting learning-by-doing, it places not only presenters but also listeners in an active role, thus achieving maximum time and result efficiency in the teaching process.
