Sažetak
EFFORTS TO PREVENT ERWINIA AMYLOVORA FROM ENTERING CROATIA-In order to assess the conditions for infections with E. amylovora in our most important pear and apple orchards we use Billing's spring system. The maximum and minimum daily temperatures and rainfall were recorded during the last two years at three orchards. Results show that at one orchard (Orlovaca) the risk of infection was low while at Porec it was low one year and moderate the other. In the Neretva river area the risk was moderate both years1. Introduction-Croatia is one of the few European countries in which E. amylovora has not been found yet, while its presence has been reported in ex. Yugoslavia - in Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia (Panic, 1991). Although E. amylovora has not been reported in Croatia, certain preventive measures have been undertaken because of the fear to be introduced from abroad. Preventive control measures have been undertaken in view of the European Phytosanitary Legistation for Quarantine Organisms which Croatia has completely accepted. These measures include:Phytosanitary inspections at different fruit growing areas in Croatia ; Phytosanitary inspections of nurseries of ornamental shrubs (Crataegus spp., Cotoneaster spp., Pyracantha sp., Sorbus spp. and others) in nurseries and along highways ; Bacteriological analysis of samples the symptoms of which resemble those of E. amylovora ; Bacteriological analysis of samples from asymptomatic host plants imported from other countries where Fire Blight is present ; Billing's warning system has proved acceptable for evaluating the potential Fire Blight activity (PFA) in many countries (Billing, 1980, 1980 a, 1989, Bazzi et al., 1983) but it has been modified in some (Schouten, 1987, Jacquart - Romon et al., 1991).
