Sažetak
Banks in the Republic of Croatia are an essential part of the entire economy since bank loans are the most important external source of funding. Croatian banking sector experienced significant changes in the last decade. A strong conglomerisation wave was one of the most critical drivers of those changes accompanied by the financial and macroeconomic consequences of the 2008 crisis but also by Croatia’s accession to the European Union in 2013. The effects of those changes were remarkable in many legal, social and economic aspects. Consequently, the banking sector experienced significant adjustments as well, since those changes strongly impacted banks’ business performance and competitiveness. This paper analyses large Croatian banks’ business performance efficiency, by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology. Analysis is made for the period 2009-2018 by using expenses categories as inputs and income categories as outputs for the sample of 7 Croatian largest private banks. The objective of this research is to determine how specific market, legal and macroeconomic conditions affected large banks’ business performance.
