Sažetak
In recent years, more research is focused on young peoples’ opinions about their own well- being. Life satisfaction is a cognitive component of subjective well-being and it is defined as evaluation of ones' life. Adolescents’ life satisfaction is an important indicator of their own well-being and it is linked with positive outcomes such as higher self-esteem and social competence. In early adolescence cognitive, social and emotional development promotes adolescents’ greater autonomy and independence from parents. However, family is still one of the most important contexts in adolescents’ development. One of the mechanisms through which parents exert their influence on the child development are parental behaviors. In this research we focus on maternal parental behaviors and their link with life satisfaction of early adolescents. Research shows that generally warm parenting has positive links, and psychological control has negative links with adolescents’ life satisfaction. We have explored seven different maternal behaviors broadly grouped into three dimensions: Parental Support, Restrictive Control, and Permissiveness. This research was conducted as part of project “Child Well-Being in Family Context” financed by Croatian Science Foundation. 200 early adolescents aged between 9 and 11 years completed The Brief Multidimensional Scale of Student Life Satisfaction (Huebner, 1994) and Parental Behavior Questionnaire (Keresteš, Brković, Kuterovac-Jagodić & Greblo, 2012). By using general linear model, we have explored links between perceived parental behaviors and adolescents’ life satisfaction. Results are interpreted in line with theory of change which links parental characteristics and behaviors with child well-being.
