Republic od Croatia has an well organized Diagnostic and Prognostic Service in forestry. The following insects are regularly monitored in Croatia: 1. Lymantria dispar &#8211 ; ; counting of egg masses 2. Operophtera brumata, Erranis defoliaria &#8211 ; ; glue rings 3. Thaumetopoea pityocampa &#8211 ; ; nest counting, cocoon counting 4. Euproctis chrysorrhoea &#8211 ; ; nest counting 5. Ips typographus, Pityogenes calcogaphus &#8211 ; ; pheromone traps 6. Tortrix viridana, Malacosoma neustria, Apethimus abdominalis, Operophtera brumata, Erannis defoliaria and other defoliating insects that feed in early spring &#8211 ; ; twig sampling In January twig samples from oak forests are collected (according to special guidelines) and samples are, in laboratory conditions, monitored for occurrence of early defoliators which overwinter in buds and on oak twigs in egg stage. According to the results of the twig analisis a damage prognosis is given so that protective measures can be prepared. The most singificant pests and diseases in Croatia in the year 2000 were: Microspahaera alphitoides, Armilaria sp., Cryphonectria parasitica ; oak defoliators Operophtera brumata, Erranis defoliaria, Tortrix viridana, Thaumetopea processionea, Euproctis chrysorrhoea, Apethimus abdominalis. Other pests that made damage to Croatian forests were: Lymantria dispar, Thaumetopoea pitiyocampa, bark beetles, oak acorn consumers, Argyresthia fundella, other biotic factors such as mistletoes and abiotic factors such as drought. Where extent of the damage was great fungicides, insecticides and other protective measures were applied.
