Sažetak
It has long been known that there are many different factors that play a significant part in the process of language acquisition. Motivation is, by far, the most significant among them. Faced with a large number of students each year, many of whom have been studying English for the better part of their lives, we are always surprised to come across great differences that exist between learners of similar backgrounds, levels of education, similar histories. In our effort to discern the origins of such dissimilarities in the success of language acquisition, we decided to focus our research on the issue of motivation, specifically integrative and instrumental motivation and see how they affect the success of language learning. We conducted our research on several groups of first year students, from the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. The students were presented with a questionnaire and asked to rate their level of agreement/disagreement with a set of utterances connected with integrative and instrumental motivations for learning professional foreign language. The results of the survey are presented in this paper.
