(Marcuse, 50th anniversary of Marcuse’s One-dimensional Man)
Sažetak
This year is the 50th anniversary of Marcuse’s One-dimensional Man. In this paper I will attempt to re-examine Marcuse's understanding of liberation through art and its significance in contemporary society. Thus, I will offer Marcusean model of subjectivity which is “bodily, erotic, sensuous and aesthetic” and immanently in discrepancy between pleasure principle and reality principle. Since the reality principle imposes upon pleasure principle dominant norms and values, the individual suppress all those strivings that are not reconciled with “technological rationality” and thus finds himself in the fragmented state. The art as the path of restoration of subject’s wholeness is central to Marcuse’s understanding of liberation. Concomitantly, Marcuse aesthetics should be read as a reminder about subject’s lost potentialities.
