Sažetak
The main purpose of this study is to provide an overview of Library and Information Science (LIS) students’ actual experiences in using mobile phones or smartphones for study and learning purposes and their perception towards the usefulness and effectiveness of mobile phones for learning in general. The study is focused on LIS undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of Tsukuba from Japan (UT). Research findings show that study participants use smartphones for communication, socializing, and entertainment purposes, such as reading comics, novels or news, listening to music, watching movies or playing games. They also use their smartphones for quick daily information searches. Most of respondents do not use smartphones for serious learning like reading academic materials or writing papers. Mostly they will search for academic resources that they can email to themselves for reading later on a computer. Nevertheless, students use smartphones for learning related activities like discussing assignments, accessing resources and news from the course management and learning platform, checking course emails, etc. Findings of this study will provide some useful guidance for the second phase of our research, where we intend to explore smartphone usage for learning more in-depth as well as looking at patterns in other countries.
