Sažetak
We estimated the total Croatian marine fisheries catches from the eastern part of the Adriatic Sea, from 1950-2010. Using the official catch database, reported in national statistical yearbooks, as the reported data baseline, we added several IUU (Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated) catch components: unreported landings, estimates of discards, and estimates of subsistence and recreational catches. This reconstructed total catch was 2.9 million tonnes from 1950-2011, which is approximately 74% higher than landings officially reported by Directorate of Fisheries for the same period. For the period since 1990 (1990-2010) this difference was on average 110%. Our reconstruction is likely an underestimate, as we used minimum values based on conservative assumptions. However, a conservative estimate is still preferable to the current default assumption of zero catch in the absence of officially-reported IUU data.
