Sažetak
The aim of this short article is to present the main outlines of current knowledge concerning the development of cortical maps. Cortical maps are basic functional units of the brain, in charge of processing specfic kind of information, be it sight, hear, touch, language, etc. Their connections and actions result in human specific mental abilities. The article illustrates the development of the idea of cortical maps, from Gall to Rakić. It also presents two major theories dealing with this matter, namely: „Radial unit hypothesis“ and „Protomap hypothesis“. The importance of morphogenetic gradient is emphasized as well. Explaining the evolutionary development of cortical maps Evo Devo is introduced as a new method of researching evolutionary changes that led to the modern complexity of the brain, that uses gene expression and experimental manipulation of embryonic development. The importane of research of cortical maps lies within its ablity to shed light onto different brain functions and processes involved in the development of numerous brain associated diesases.
