Sažetak
In preparation of halogen bonded multicomponent solids, most comonly used halogen bond donors are commercially available perfluorinated halocarbons [1]. However, several other pathways towards halogen bonded networks, based on different halogen bond donors, have been suggested [2]. One of these is the use of halogenated (aromatic) cations as donors ; for example, Logothetis co- workers synthesized N- methyl-3, 5- dibromopyridinium iodide with C–Br⋯I− halogen bonds between the brominated cation and the iodide anion [2]. Brammer and co-workers utilized the above mentioned type of cations and synthesized their cyanometallate salts, where cations and anions are also interconnected trough halogen bonds [3, 4]. Inspired by the earlier research, we have decided to expand the connectivity capabilities of N-alkylated halogenpyridinium cations by synthesizing dications with two halopyridinium units bridged by an alkyl subunit, which could act as ditopic halogen bond donors. In this presentation, we will describe the synthesis of a number of such cations and demonstrate their potential for participating in halogen bonding with halide counterions. In crystal structures of all prepared compounds, the cations and anions are interconnected trough C–X⋯A− (X = Br or I ; A− = Br− or I−) halogen bonds. These crystal structures clearly indicate that N, N`- alkyl- bis(halogenpyridinium) cations can act as polytopic halogen bond donors.
