Sažetak
Halogen bonds have become valuable tool for supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering, almost equal to hydrogen bonds, due the fact that halogen and hydrogen bond are very similar both their strength and directionality as well as in trends in which they change. [1] One apparent exception is halogen bond with halide anions as acceptors – smaller halide anions being weaker halogen bond acceptors. [2] However, there has been no systematic study of simultaneous halogen and hydrogen bonds to halide ions to date. In order to study this, we decided to compare these two intermolecular interactions by investigation of their coexistence in halide salts of o-, m- and p- iodopyridine. In all prepared salts halide ions and iodopyridine cations were connected through C–I⋯ X− halogen and through N–H⋯X− hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen bond was found more sensitive to the change of the halide anion as an acceptor than the halogen bond. The preference of lighter halide anions to hydrogen bond and heavier halide anions to halogen bond has been observed from crystal structure of double salt, o- iodopyridinium chloride iodide.
