Sažetak
Abstract Introduction: The research deals with the physical activity of the elderly, with the individual aspects in the forefront being the dominant motor behaviour, the acquired motor habits and skills. The aim of the research is to present and contribute to the understanding of the physical activity of older people, and the research question is: what are the motor skills and behaviours of a person who is continuously physically active and a person who exercises periodically? Methods: The study was conducted using the observation method in a fitness room where three older people were observed exercising. The observation included observing the behaviour, manner and amount of physical activity, habits and forms of movement, rhythm, economy and aesthetics of movement. An interview was conducted with the most active observed elderly person. Results: Physically active older people are motivated for the activity, it is their lifestyle, it gives them pleasure and it gives them confidence. They have acquired motor skills and habits that develop and transform activities from childhood and youth. Elderly people who exercise occasionally find a motive in maintaining health, often exercising on the recommendation of a doctor, and their motor skills and behaviours are less well-developed. Discussion and conclusion: Knowledge and motivation to exercise properly enables well- being for the individual. Improper exercise and physical activity can be detrimental to an individual’s health. Promoting a healthy and active life that involves proper physical activity is the best medicine of today. Keywords: physical activity, behavioural observation, benefit of physical activity »The recipe for a long life is moderation, both in food and drink, and it is especially important to engage in various forms of recreation. That’’s why I feel good even in my old age. " (Leon Stukelj, on the eve of his 100th birthday)
