Sažetak
The aims of this paper are twofold. Departing from the premises that the volume The Railway. An Adventure in Construction articulates manual work on the construction of the railway as an activity which has at the same time concrete (quantitatively measurable) and symbolic value (along with the railway, a new society was being built), the paper offers close reading of the volume and aims to situate it more firmly in the complex genealogy of cultural studies. The paper illuminates Thompson’s epistemological novelty in terms of preferring experience and human agency over theory and ideology, thus offering poignant and penetrating definition of the meanings and contents of “historical fact”. Stories about the participation of British youth in building of the Yugoslav railway should not only be classified as a sharp and valuable contribution to the largely underrepresented history of labour in the period of the propulsive development of the new Yugoslav social formations, but also as a kind of “raw” draft of Thomson's 1963 seminal study about the making of the British working class. By archiving the socialist subjectivities in their “virgin phase” of development, the volume has particular cultural and historical value in the so much needed process of eliciting Yugoslav cultural, social and economic heritage not only in comparative perspective, but also in times when youth work actions embodied an authentic vision of Yugoslav socialism.
