Sažetak
Mercury (Hg) is a persistent human and animal toxicant. This toxicity is evident in all of its three forms e elemental, ionic or inorganic Hg (II) (mercuric) compounds and organic Hg, of which the mono-methylated form (MeHg) is most widely known because of the fatalities or permanent disability suffered by thousands in historic accidental discharges. The toxicological outcomes of Hg exposure depend directly on which of these individual forms was involved and which organs were impacted, although exposure to the organic form, particularly MeHg, has been the most studied in recent years. The inorganic form has been reported to cause effects on the skin, kidneys, liver, gastro-intestinal tract and also the foetus, because of its ability to cross the transplacental boundary. Both, elemental and organic Hg target the brain and nervous system - elemental Hg is reported to show neuromotor effects, but it is MeHg which so far has shown the most potent neurotoxic effects.
