Sažetak
Purpose: The main goal of this study was to examine the relationship between national and global identities and personal values among youth cross- national samples. Background: Studies focused on explaining the difference in identification with one’s own nation with differences in personal values have provided some arguments in favor of their relationships. However, these studies were regionally specific and employed adult participants. This study, conducted on adolescent samples, extends the knowledge on the relationship between personal values and national identification across different cultures and additionally tests the role of values in explaining the global identification. Methods: The data for this correlation study are collected by the Ten Item Values Inventory and two-dimensional Global Identity Scale among high school students in nine countries (total N cc 18 000, fieldwork: October 2019-February 2020, within ongoing EU Horizon2020 CHIEF project). Data will be analyzed by multi- group structural equation modelling. The results: Results (based on pilot survey among high school students from Croatia, India, Latvia, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey collected in February 2019, N=738) confirmed that, in general, conservation values predicted national identification, while openness to change values predicted global identification. Self-transcendence values predicted both identifications, although some culture-specific differences were noticed. Conclusions: The results are discussed in terms of strengths and weakness of the Schwartz value theory and the Ten Item Values Inventory for understanding identity content, general differences in the meaning of national and global identification, and cultural differences in national and global youth’ identifications.
