Sažetak
The European Union and other countries around the world are implementing policies that aim to improve the transportation energy efficiency with sustainability as their ultimate goal. The ultimate goal of transport electrification is achieving zero CO 2 emissions. However, many railway lines in Europe that are rather lengthy and are characterized by low traffic densities are still not electrified due to significant capital infrastructure costs associated with railway line electrification. Therefore, this paper presents a hypothetical conversion and modernization of a conventional heavy haul diesel-electric locomotive to its battery counterpart by replacing the engine-generator set with a suitable battery energy storage system. The quasi-static models of the conventional and battery electric locomotives are derived and validated. Both the conventional and battery electric locomotive models are then used for the purpose of comparative analysis of main vehicle characteristics for the realistic railway route driving scenario, which includes realistic slope and speed limitations. The obtained simulation results are used to gain insights about the possible advantages of the proposed conversion and possible partial power-train electrification in terms of feasible reduction of fuel consumption and related CO 2 emissions, which can be performed by: en-route scheduled charging, and (ii) by means of simultaneous en-route utilisation of the conventional and battery-electric locomotive.
