Sažetak
Aim: To describe the problem of obesity occurrence in persons with psychiatric disorders, primarily with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the role of medications in occurrence of obesity and potential for prevention and treatment of obesity in these patients. Methods: The literature search was conducted using pubMed. Literature search: Some of the most effective medications in treatment of psychiatric disorders are connected with biggest increase of body weight. The first line medications for patients with psychiatric disorder and obesity should be effective in treatment of psychiatric disorder, safe, well tolerated, and, if potiiblr, neutral regarding effects on weight or connected with weight loss. During treotment of patients with mental illness it is necessary to assess patient's metabolic and cardiovascular risk, monitor body mass index, waist circumference, values of fasting glucose and lipids regularly, evaluate metabolic rlsk connected with application of piyinopharmacs, and choose , , less threatening" medication. Promotion of healthy tife siytes omong persons with mental illness is important not only as a port of their recovery, but as integral part in prevention of metabolic changes and weight gain connected with their ilhess and side effects of medications. Conclusion: The data from literature point to occurrence of weight gain in patient w1h serious psychiatrlc disorders, partially due to side effects of medications, and suggest potential approaches in d\aling with this problem. ln order to find additionat efFiitive solutions regarding prevention and management of weight gain in patients with psychiatric disorders further investigations are required.
