Sažetak
Growth of cities and construction of infrastructural networks are some of the physical manifestations of modernity, but are not its inventions . At least in the early stages, modernization processes often increase social disparities, just like rapid industrialization and large-scale construction increase environmental perils . Modernization provokes controversies at local and global scales, but the notion that citizens of societies we consider modernized enjoy a higher standard of living and human rights as well as a more even spread of national wealth, still holds . A fast but discontinuous pace of modernization, with striking manifestations in physical reality is another common characteristic of different territories encompassed under the notion of the Middle East.
