Sažetak
The paper deals with actions of father and son, Laval and Albert Nugent, in the revolutionary year 1848. Special attention will be paid to their relations with Josip Jelačić. Both of them were active in Croatian politics prior to 1848, as well as strong supporters of the Illyrian movement. Therefore, their actions in 1848 are to be viewed from two perspectives – both as expected actions of soldiers loyal to the Monarchy (at the time Laval held the rank of field marshal lieutenant, and Albert that of a lieutenant colonel) and as reactions of Croatian patriots against foreign hegemony. Laval Nugent was an experienced Habsburg general of Irish origin who gain his first fame in the time of Napoleonic wars. He was chief military commander of Silesia and Moravia (1839-1840), of Croatia (1840-1842) and of Inner Austria and Tirol (1848-1849). In 1848 he first fought against Italian revolution in Northern Italy alongside Josef Radetzky and then against Hungarian revolution alongside Josip Jelačić. For his military successes he was awarded with the rank of field marshal and decorated with the Commander's Cross of Maria Theresa. At the same time, his son Albert fought for the Croatian rights ; he was part of a delegation sent to Vienna to present Zahtijevanja naroda (The demands of the people) to the emeperor, he was Ljudevit Gaj's patron and protector and was trying by all means to stop Hungarian political and territorial pretensions to Croatia. Enjoying Jelačić's confidence, he was appointed commander of Slavonia and Srijem and, after the war against Hungary, commander of mobile troops in the Varaždin area. Being politically very important, Albert Nugent served as a Croatian delegate in front of Archduke Johann in the process of reconciliation with Hungary.
