Sažetak
The Euganean Geothermal Field near Padua (NE Italy) is located along a regional tectonic structure (Schio-Vicenza fault) that constitutes the north-western border of the Adriatic indenter. Given the subparallel movement of the Adria plate, this structure has accommodated the Paleogene extension with a normal movement and the subsequent Neogene to present compression with a sinistral strike-slip kinematic. New mesostructural data confirm this sequence of movements. The analysis of seismic sections showed that the fault is not a single rectilinear structure, as it is usually represented, but a system of NE-dipping synthetic segments. The thermal field is located in correspondence with an extensional stepover developing between two fault segments. Therefore, the rise of hot water can be interpreted as related to the dense fracturing in this interaction zone resulting in an increased permeability of the bedrock.
