Sažetak
This work presents the results of a multi-disciplinary investigation conducted on a travertine mound in the Euganean Geothermal Field (Veneto region ; NE Italy). The deposit is mostly composed by layered travertine made of lime-mudstone with paper-thin rafts and laminae of bacterial shrubs. The surficial part of the mound (< 1 m) was dated between 30±4 and 25±5 ka using U isotopes. The mound is deformed by WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW fissures that were interpreted as a fracture mesh developed in a dilational stepover between strike-slip or transtensional faults. These fractures favour the rising of thermal waters (and their outflow in the recent past) as corroborated by geophysical investigations (i.e., electromagnetic survey and electrical resistivity tomography). The results of this study support the occurrence of a releasing structure in the subsurface of the thermal field controlling the rising of thermal waters up to shallow depths.
