Sažetak
The paper deals with the issue of jurisdiction over Međimurje at the end of the First world war and in the early 1920's. It will try to determine, from the events occurring in Međimurje and the political changes taking place at the time, how big a part in the process of Međimurje being annexed to Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians played the publics self-determination and the emerging historical events (Slavko Kvaternik's succesful military campaign and concurring of Međimurje ; Béla Kun’s communist revolution and establishing of Hungarian Soviet Republic ; and the implementation of the Treaty of Trianon), respectively. The annexation of Međimurje is observed in the context of president's Wilson's newly proclaimed right on self-determination, which the Versailles treaty conference supported. The key question posed in this paper is if the Vinko Žganec's book Hrvatske pučke popijevke iz Međimurja (Croatian folk-songs from Međimurje) has had a role in the decision- making process regarding the adnexion, and if it has how significant it was? Besides Žganec's book the paper will pay some attention to so- called Čakovec's cultural circle (Čakovečki kutlurni krug, led by Ivan Novak and Vinko Žganec the circle included composers Josip Štolcer Slavenski, Janko Solgar and Miroslav Magdalenić, painter Ladislav Kralje Međimurec and poet Nikola Pavić) and the most important individuals who were part of it. Their works were often inspired by Međimurje's folklore, which helped in preserving the Croatian identity inspite of hungarisation and strenghtened people's desire to separate from Hungary and join Croatia. The author will try to determine the importance that song-book Hrvatske pučke popijevke iz Međimurja had in the process of the annexation and will deal with the cultural works that may have strenghten Croatian identity i.e. those events that may influence the way individuals will „self-determine“ them selves.
