Sažetak
In this talk I give a brief survey of the historically most important accounts of the concept of self and contrast them with the understanding of this concept in contemporary debates. I argue that in the history of philosophy, the concept of self served mainly as a tool for describing some other concepts, like soul, person, or memory. Consequently, the intelligibility of the concept of self was not disputable. By contrast, in contemporary philosophy, the concept of self is seen as a self-contained concept, which itself requires an explanation and justification. Hence, there is a need for an ahistorical approach to the self, which, in my opinion, can be fruitfully reconciled with a historical approach, provided that we bear in mind that “the self” has taken on a new meaning in recent decades.
