Sažetak
Prison violence is important subject due to its consequences on prisoners and staff as well as on rehabilitation dimension of the prison sentence. The aim of this study was to investigate major forms of violence and to test importation model for violent behaviour in prison. The study draws on self-report data in a sample of 318 male prisoners from 7 penitentiary facilities in Croatia. In total, 24 items were analysed and they were grouped in three forms of violence: physical violence, threats and provocative behaviours. Prisoners reported low levels of violent behaviour in general. Provocative behaviours were reported more frequently than the others two. The results of the regression analysis indicate that importation model is significant in explaining physical violence among prisoners. In terms of individual variables, data revealed that only physical aggression (as personality trait) and education were significant predictors in explaining physical violence. Other analysed variables (age, violent criminal offence, and recidivism, number of criminal offences, verbal aggression, anger and hostility) were not significant predictors in explaining physical violence among prisoners. The relevance of this result is discussed.
