Sažetak
In the context in which the emerging virtual – including learning – environments are but simulations of reality, the awareness of mechanisms through which a whole new universe of words is being transferred to increasingly specialized technical jargon is essential not only for understanding of the language but also the concepts themselves. In that respect, metaphor is seen as an invaluable tool toward rendering the ‘meaning’ of the words ‘meaningful’ to future business and computing specialists. The talk aims to reveal the ubiquitous presence of metaphor – generally considered to be a trademark of poetic language – by giving examples pertaining to Business English and English for Computing, respectively. The items are analyzed at the single-word, phrase and sentence level. Apart from being instructed to build associative links between lexical items, students are made aware of the impact metaphorical language can have on style ; metaphor is analyzed as a vehicle for engaging the reader’s attention through humour and word play, particularly for marketing purposes. Besides the metaphor itself, its extensions – understatement and analogy – are discussed. Whereas the former is used to illustrate how ‘what they tell you’ is not necessarily ‘what they mean’, the latter can be exploited in the classroom as a means of making both linguistic and extra-linguistic content more comprehensible to students. To sum up, the talk is supposed to make the participants aware of the cornucopia of ‘metaphors we live by’, as well as a huge cognitive potential of ‘metaphors we teach/learn by’.
