Comptom scattering on K-electrons; setup with two detectors
Sažetak
In measurements of Comptom scattering on K-electrons, which have previously been made, a detector of characteristic K X-radiation has been used, in order to ascertain Compton scattering only on K-electrons. The use of the K X-ray radiation detector, detecting the small amount of escaping K X-radiation, considerably decreases the efficiency of the scattering measurement. We propose a measurement of Compton scattering on K-electrons without the use of the detector of K X-ray radiation, with an expected increase of efficiency of the measurement by an order of magnitude The idea is applicable for an experimental setup with two detectors which coincidentally detect energy E1 of recoiled electron given to one detector, and energy E2 of Compton scattered photon, given to the second detector. Almost all data due to the scattering only on K-electrons would be placed in an "event line" E1+E2=E0-B in the (E1, E2) spectrum plane, where E0 is energy of the incident photon and B the binding energy of K-electrons. The proposed method has two disadvantages: a) the target can be only a detector material, b) the Compton scattered spectrum can be measured only up to the energy B, because of double craoss-talk between the two detectors, wich contributes to the "event line" E1+E2=E0-B at energies of scattered photons higher than B and is a much stronger process than the Compton scattering on K-electrons.
