Sažetak
Following David Morley’s recent call for a recovery of the initial understanding of communications, where the symbolic only becomes relevant in conjunction with the material, I submit that media studies requires a return to where it all began – the city – not least because there isn’t a single tradition in media studies without an urban pedigree. Exploring ‘media and the city’ in particular, confronted me with the unknown universe of urban studies, where shared concerns are frequently discussed with greater effect. Looking back on that experience, I argue that media studies requires a resuscitative urban shot, if it is to rehabilitate its early interdisciplinary and creative impulse.
