Sažetak
This paper tries to integrate the literature on social psychology of mass violence with the concept of cultural trauma. Furthermore, it applies it to the case dealing with the past of post-Yugoslav wars. Through this lens it shows how unsuccessful was this process. In the last several decades coming to terms with the violent past in the former Yugoslavia has been mostly unsuccessful and resisted by nationalist mythology. Facing the Other through the whole of the 20th century has led here, too many times, to conflicts, bigotry and wars, and consequently to the memory construction that called upon new conflicts to finish the old wars started by former generations. This process has been too often marked by acting-out and very little by working-through the traumatic past, first after the World War II, and then after the wars in the 1990s. Local elites still promote such violence as a form of masculine bravery and heroism, while the wish for reconciliation is still dominantly depicted as national high treason. Such an ideological framework has proved highly resistant to constructively dealing with the past, conceived as a systematic social project with the purpose of establishing permanent peace, justice and peaceful inter-ethnic relationships.
