Sažetak
Sphingolipid are defined as substances having a long - chain base in common. The name they have been given because of their enigmatic (sphinx-like) features, sphingolipids have fully justified during all these years, and should emphasized thet for a long time any advences in the understanding of their role actually failed to accompany the chemical research into sphingolipids. The high concentration of these substances in the central nervous system had already been observed by the first researchers, yet the role of these substances has until recently remained mysterious. The studies performed during the last fifteen years have contributed to the abrupt unveiling this of group of substances, associating them with transfer of the signals modulating cellular growth, differentiation, a number of cellular functions, and programed cell death. However, although intensive, these recent studies have only tackled the tip of the iceberg awaiting to be discovered, and to allow complete clarification of the role of sphingolipids in the biological systems.
