Sažetak
Diplomacy has traditionally been reserved for men meaning it has been very difficult for women to enter it at the highest position. Even Nicollo Machiavelli, the pioneer of diplomatic theory and practice, emphasized the importance of masculine characteristics in conducting state relations. This could be seen for example in the United Kingdom to which it took 191 year to appoint first female head of the mission. Firstly women served as wives of diplomats without a salary, being constantly their husbands „eyes and ears“ at functions. In 1946 women were given the opportunity to become career diplomat in the Foreign Office. When they took leadership positions, they demonstrated strong masculine traits, such as Joan of Arc or Catherine the Great. However, they were also expected to act as feminist icons by creating positive changes for women. This paper analyses the role Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hilary Clinton had as Secretary of State in empowering the role of women in diplomacy.
