Sažetak
The "Novi Zagreb" Health Centre is a primary health care organisation which includes 50 General Practitioners (GPs) working for the population of about 110, 000 inhgabitants in the city area. In 1992 GPs started to treat heroin addicts b methadone programme in slow detoxification scheme or methadone maintenance programe. Aim: The aim of the study is to search for the outcome of methadone treatment to introduce quality control of that kind of service. Design: In 1995. monitoring system started. Personal data of patients, data regarding elements of treatment procelss as well as outcome measurement data were collected and analysed. Results: 24GPs were taking care of 191 patients in the period of 7 years. 80% of the population were male, 70, 5% were at the age between 21 and 30, 26, 2% at the age over 31. Duration of heroin use before treatment varied 1 to 17 years, but 5, 8% patients used heroin less than one year before starting the treatment. 78, 7% patients were planned for detoxification scheme, but after 7 years 64 % were still on methadone. The average daily dose of methadone when starting therapy was 75 mg and for those still on methadone in 2002 average daily dose was 56 mg. Rearding the outcome of treatment in 2002, 77, 6% stopped using heroin, 65, 0% positively altered their lifestyle, 75, 8% stopped their criminal behaviour, and 33, 1% were temporary or permanently employed. Conclusion: This monitoring system proof to be useful in discovering good and weak points of methadone treatment in the Novi Zagreb Health Centre.
