Sažetak
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric condition among veterans who were directly exposed to combat experiences. Given the inconsistent findings in this field, the aim of our study was to investigate the association between childhood trauma, including various trauma types, and PTSD symptom severity among Croatian war veterans.Our results have revealed significant, and independent, effects of age and two childhood trauma types on symptom severity among Croatian male veterans suffering from combat-related PTSD. Emotional abuse during childhood (e.g., consistent hurtful comments and insults by the parents) seems to amplify the clinical picture of war-related PTSD in adulthood.Contrary to emotional abuse, we obtained a negative association between physical neglect and PTSD. Given the novelty of this association, more research needs to replicate this finding in the population of war veterans.
