Sažetak
Introduction Depression is the most common mental disorder in the elderly population with a major impact on quality of life and mortality. According to the estimates of the World Health Organization, 20% of the elderly suffer from some symptoms of depression. There are a number of tests available to detect a suspicion of depressive disorder. One of the most used tests is the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15). The goal of our research was to determine the incidence of depressive symptoms in people hospitalized in the geriatric rehabilitation department. Methods A total of 473 patients were included in retrospective analysis (170 men and 303 females), average age of 83.8 years (minimum 65 years, maximum 101 years). All subjects were tested with GDS-15 (positive test implies GDS- 15 value of > 5). Their social status was also analysed. The results were analysed by IBM SPSS Statistics. Results In a total of 105 (22.2%) patients the test confirmed existence of depressive symptoms (34 men and 71 females). Most of the patients live in the usual home environment (79.4% of men and 74.6% of females). In women, symptoms are mostly present in women who are widows, divorced or unmarried (49 women-69.0%). In the male population the majority are married men or men who live in a partnership (22 men– 64.7%) Conclusion Depression is present in a high percentage of patients hospitalized for geriatric rehabilitation. Routine screening is necessary for timely recognition of depressive symptoms, conducting further tests in the detection of depression. Initiation of therapy and adequate preparation of patients for hospital discharge and continuation of treatment in the ambulatory environment is necessary.
