Sažetak
Medical care is recognised as challenging for persons with ASD. Professionals need to be adequately educated, sensitive and flexible in order to provide quality treatment service. Research indicate that persons with ASD visit hospitals more often then others. Therefor, awareness among doctors is important. Otherwise, stigma will be developed among doctors and patients in waiting room as well. Many parents report of negative and traumatic experiences because individual needs of persons with ASD are not recognized. Waiting rooms are not sensory friendly, they are too noisy, too crowded with no alternative to visit. Doctors don't know how to communicate or to explain the purpose of the medical service. Therefor, the goal of this research was to examine experiences of visiting hospitals for persons with ASD and their families in Croatia and to compare results between continental and northern coast area which will set the foundation for education on waiting rooms in hospitals and access to persons with ASD and their parents. It is hypothesized that there is no statistically significant difference among continental and northern coast area of Croatia in experiences visiting hospitals for parents and children with ASD. This study was conducted in continental part of Croatia and northern coast. It was designed as pilot study for examining the requirements for education of doctors about ASD. It was conducted in January. Data was collected by questionnaire designed for the purpose of this research filled by sixty parents of children with ASD. Most frequent age of children with ASD in the survey was up to sex years and they mostly visits a doctor for check up but, specialized review as well. Results also indicate that there is no statistically significant difference between experiences in waiting rooms, doctors approach and recommendations for the advancement of medical practice in these parts of Croatia. Doctors rarely know how to communicate with persons with ASD, environment is not adjusted and parents are not respected as the best acquaintances of their child. Therefor, implications for education will be just the same in these parts of Croatia. This study emphasize the importance on adequate education among all experts working with children with ASD and their families, medical system customization as well.
